Why ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis, also known as ABA therapy, is an evidence-based treatment for children and adults with autism. ABA focuses on positive reinforcement techniques in areas such as language development, social skills, and daily living skills (like toilet training).

ABA therapy is scientifically validated and has been proven to help children with autism. It is endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Who Provides ABA Therapy Services?

Our qualified and trained Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) provide ABA services in Colorado. Certified ABA therapists design and directly oversee ABA therapy programs designed individually for each client.

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) is the professional body responsible for certifying Behavior Analysts. In order to be eligible for the certification examination, individuals must have earned at least a Master’s degree in Behavior Analysis or a related field approved by the BACB, such as Education, Psychology, or Social Work. Those seeking certification are required to complete specific graduate-level coursework in Behavior Analysis and many hours of supervised experience. Parents or guardians should make sure they find someone who is accredited and trustworthy.

How Does ABA Therapy Work?

ABA therapy works in a series of stages starting with a consultation and evaluation. You should search for “aba therapy near me” and find a local ABA therapy provider to schedule an evaluation. The initial assessment with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBC) is a functional behavior assessment, or FBA. Part of the assessment is interacting with your child and determining their strengths and challenges. The BCBA will also meet with you and your family to discuss your goals and challenges that you would like addressed in your child’s ABA program.

The clinician will spend some time interacting with the person being assessed to make notes about their behavior, communication, and skill set. Doing observations within the home and school setting could also be part of the assessment. The more an ABA therapist can see the person doing their typical daily activities the more accurate their findings will be.

ABA Helps a Wide Variety of People

ABA therapy can help a wide range of people. Most people who use this therapy have autism, but the number of people who can benefit from treatment is larger.

The advantages of ABA are many. The initial evaluation is thorough, so this allows for a more specific treatment and intervention plan to develop. Therapists who have earned national board certification can do the treatments. Professionals monitor progress closely and treatment plans can adjust based on the client’s need.

The first step on the road toward improving your life or the life of someone you know is contacting a local ABA therapist to ask questions and schedule an initial evaluation.
